The Sri Sarada Mahila Samiti of Northern California was established in 1997 following a
lecture tour by Revered Pravrajika Amalaprana, the current General Secretary of Sri
Sarada Math and the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission headquartered in Dakshineswar,
During her May, 1997 visit to Sacramento, California, she described the hundreds of "mahila samitis" throughout India. Mahila Samiti literally means, women gathering together. These women of India meet together for personal spiritual benefit, for service projects, and for the well being of others. We were inspired to begin to meet regularly for spiritual discussions and meditation.
After Pravrajika Amalaprana conducted the retreat entitled, "Prayer and Its Efficacy", she offered these encouraging words: Through prayer, one can reach and become one with God... Sri Ramakrishna came to declare that each and every one of us is a storehouse of infinite energy. A woman is indeed the embodiment of great Divine energy. So I hope and pray that Mother will bless you all. Mother will make each and every one of you a big and beautiful storehouse of energy to inspire others. Sit together, meditate upon Her and thus, if you call upon Her, it will not be late for Her to come and reside here. May Mother bless you all. May Mother be enshrined in the hearts of you all. May She shower Her choicest blessings on all of you is my heartfelt prayer. Jaya MA! Holy Mother, Sri Sarada Devi said: Cling to what you have found. Say to yourself, 'Even if I have no one else, I have a Mother.' (The Holy Mother, Sri Sarada Devi. In the Company of the Holy Mother. page 253.)
Within a few years, we formed a spiritual circle of our own in the name of the Holy Mother, Sri Sarada Devi. On August 23, 2002, The Sri Sarada Mahila Samiti of Northern California was approved by the Internal Revenue Service as a nonprofit religious organization within the State of California.
